Prevent

Anti-Radicalisation: PREVENT at Bridge Hall Primary

In March 2015, the Counterterrorism and Security Act came into force, giving schools the important responsibility to help prevent children being drawn into extremism. At Bridge Hall, safeguarding children from all risks of harm is a priority — and protecting them from extremism is part of that commitment.

What we believe:

Our curriculum helps pupils explore and celebrate the diverse, multicultural society we live in. We teach respect for everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, ability, or beliefs. We want children to build strong self-esteem, stand up for themselves, and treat others kindly, so they’re less likely to be influenced by negative peer pressure.

What is PREVENT?

PREVENT is a Government strategy to stop extremism and radicalisation before it happens. It focusses on early support and intervention to protect people who might be vulnerable to harmful influences — such as extreme political or religious views that could lead to violence.

Why is PREVENT important?

Recognising signs early helps keep young people safe by spotting behaviours that might suggest they are at risk of being drawn into terrorism or extremism.

Key terms:

  • Radicalisation: When someone begins to support terrorism or extremist views, sometimes leading to involvement in harmful groups.

  • Extremism: Actively opposing British values like democracy, the rule of law, and respect for different faiths and beliefs.
